Coal
and wind turbines both have their down falls regarding a lot of different
things such as always having the energy or even killing off animals. However
some of their cons may not be as important to other people. Such as coal power
plants leak out toxins such as mercury poison. Also, wind turbines kill off
birds due to being in the air.
Why is coal so bad?
ReplyDeleteCoal is non-renewable (cannot be reused again) and rapidly diminishing energy source, bearing coal transportation costs, especially for countries with no coal resources which will require special harbors for coal import and storage.
DeleteWhy are the reasons that fossil fuels are so bad?
ReplyDeleteMany people know that when you burn fossil fuels such as coal it releases carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas; however, these had been stored in the earth for millions of years, contributing to global warming (Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Power Plants Rated Worldwide). Coal in particular is much dirtier than other forms of fossil fuels and releases considerably more CO2, NO, SO2 and other gaseous byproducts than oil or natural gas (Environmental impacts of coal power).
DeleteVery true. I guess it doesn’t help that the people of the United States depend on motor vehicles. This then would mean more carbon dioxide in the air. That is a really good point.
DeleteHow much carbon dioxide is produce by coal plants?
ReplyDeleteA coal plant generates about 3,700,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year; this is one of the main causes of global warming (Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Power Plants Rated Worldwide). Which some people may not believe in.
DeleteSo it leaves behind harmful byproducts, thus polluting the earth’s atmosphere. Now I am thinking about this, that I am currently breathing in the pollution cause by the coal plants around my house that could be cause the weird climate changes.
DeleteI was reading that you had said that coal pollutes fish. Is that true?
ReplyDeleteYes it is.According to Mercury Contamination of Aquatic Ecosystems, on average 170 pounds of mercury is made by a single coal plant each year (Mercury Contamination of Aquatic Ecosystems). Living in the great state of Minnesota, many of us eat an abundant amount of fish and since the fish might be poisoned by the mercury and could cause an illness to our bodies.
DeleteSo that is putting innocent peoples’ lives at risk for lung disease. So the toxins that are being released by the coal power plants is why we have to limit ourselves to a certain amount of fish so that the poisonous led in the fish we eat don’t end up poisoning us.
DeleteI can’t think of any disadvantages of wind turbines. I’ve always thought that they were great for the environment. What are some of them?
ReplyDeleteOne would know to make electricity from wind one would also need wind to make it. Thus being a disadvantage to wind power, and windmills, is the unpredictability of wind. Since sometimes there is no wind, the turbines on a windmill don’t rotate all the time which would then mean that there would be no energy produced. Windmills could be knocked down by harsh winds.
DeleteI am pretty sure that you can purchase insurance for your wind turbine incase such things like that happened to it.
DeleteI have always looked at them and found them to be “ugly”
ReplyDeleteSome people think when looking at a wind turbine that it is an eye-sore which basically means that it is ugly and hard to look at. However, when compared to a coal plant, many agree that they would rather see a wind turbine then smoke, gas and toxins being released into the air. Looking at the smoke just seems like a messy situation because coal makes a cloudy dark smoke.
DeleteTrue, you do make a good point. I rather look at a wind turbine than a dark black cloud emerging out of a coal power plant. Now that I think of it, which is probably why they make wind turbines white. Whenever I think of the color white I think of something clean.
